Research has found that regular physical activity appears as effective as psychotherapy for treating mild to moderate depression. Therapists also report that patients who exercise regularly simply feel better and are less likely to overeat or abuse alcohol and drugs. Source: CMHA

HPHA is a member of the Huron Perth Addiction & Mental Health Alliance.

The Mental Health Inpatient Unit provides a safe environment for short-term, acute treatment to help people become stable.  Staff will monitor medications, provide short-term counseling, complete discharge planning and make referrals to appropriate supports in the community.

Stratford General Hospital is a Schedule I facility with 15 adult psychiatric beds.  This unit offers an interdisciplinary team approach with active participation by the patient.  Our team consists of Psychiatrists, Nurses, a Social Worker, an Occupational Therapist, and an Activities Coordinator.

Psychiatrists with private practices are located in the Special Services Unit, along with one GP psychotherapist.  Physician referral is required for consultation in psychiatry and can be made by fax to 519-272-8226.

In keeping with the values of the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance the care that we provide to clients admitted to the inpatient mental health unit will demonstrate Trust, Respect, Fairness, Advocacy, Leading to Accountability, Compassion, Collaboration and Responsiveness.

Upon admission patients and their families will be provided with guides to the Inpatient Mental Health Unit.  These guides provide information on the following topics:

  • Admissions Process
  • Hand Hygiene
  • Meal Schedules & Nutrition Breaks
  • Unit Passes
  • Visitors
  • Safety
  • Use of Hospital Facilities
  • Important phone numbers and key contacts

These guides can also be viewed online.

Our HPHA Patient & Family Guidebook may also be of interest.
