Research has found that regular physical activity appears as effective as psychotherapy for treating mild to moderate depression. Therapists also report that patients who exercise regularly simply feel better and are less likely to overeat or abuse alcohol and drugs. Source: CMHA

HPHA Receives Green Light to Move Forward with Tradition Mutual Centre for Wellness Expansion

May 11, 2018

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) is excited to confirm that official approval has been received from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to award the construction contract for a major expansion project at the Tradition Mutual Centre for Wellness in St. Marys.

“When opened in 2003 the Wellness Centre immediately strengthened the delivery of primary care for the residents of St. Marys and area,” says HPHA Board Chair John Wolfe. “This expansion allows for further growth and is a tremendous example of how local vision, commitment and support can contribute to improving the health of the population,” he said.

The $2.9 million, two-storey, 7,433 square foot expansion will create additional space for the Happy Valley Family Health Team plus a teaching space for medical residents and two additional spaces that will be available for lease.

As with the initial development, the expansion is being generously funded by the community through the leadership of the St. Marys Memorial Hospital Foundation and their “Someone I Know” capital campaign.

“Someone I Know is about to become ‘something to see' as we begin the cornerstone project of our capital campaign,” says Pat Craigmile, St. Marys Memorial Hospital Foundation Chair. “This expansion will allow the Happy Valley Family Health Team to expand their teaching capabilities by increasing the number of their learners per year. The increased space also allows for further recruitment of Physicians as our community continues to grow.”

A ground-breaking ceremony is currently being planned, with the 12-month construction project expected to start in June. The successful contractor is K+L Construction Ltd., from London, Ontario.

The HPHA thanks patients, visitors and surrounding residents in advance for their patience during construction and will provide regular updates to the community on the project's progress.
