Your blood type determines who you can donate to, or receive blood from. People with type O negative (O-) are considered universal donors, as they can donate red blood cells to all other blood type recipients. That’s why it’s always in high demand — it’s used in emergency situations when there is no time to test a patient’s blood type. Source: Canadian Blood Services

Diabetes Self Management!  25th Annual Huron Perth Diabetes Day

On Tuesday, April 30, 2019 those living with diabetes and their caregivers are invited to attend the 25th Annual Huron Perth Diabetes Day presented by the Huron Perth Diabetes Education Program.

This year's event takes place at the Mitchell Arena and Community Centre and will feature the following guest speakers:

  • Brianne Skinner, a Registered Dietitian at Zehrs Listowel, Stratford and Goderich.
  • Jennifer Wicks, a Licensed Optician at Quo Vadis Mobile.
  • Angela Musico, a Registered Dietitian with the Regional Kidney Program at London Health Sciences Centre.
  • Mike Masse, a holistic therapist who specializes in applying mindfulness techniques to help adults reduce stress and anxiety.

“This year's guest speaker lineup highlights prevention, regular self-care and debunks some of the common misperceptions about diabetes,” says Aileen Knip, Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator.

A hot lunch will be served and local vendors and blood glucose meter representatives will be on hand for demonstrations.

This year's event starts at 9:30 am and wraps up at 3:00 pm.

“One of the greatest parts of this annual event is observing the valuable information sharing and comradery that happens between the participants, the guest speakers and the vendors,” adds Knip.
