Your blood type determines who you can donate to, or receive blood from. People with type O negative (O-) are considered universal donors, as they can donate red blood cells to all other blood type recipients. That’s why it’s always in high demand — it’s used in emergency situations when there is no time to test a patient’s blood type. Source: Canadian Blood Services

Postponement of Non-Urgent, Non-Essential Services

[Updated June 9, 2020 at 3:40 p.m. – this information is subject to change.]

To reduce non-essential visits to all Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) hospitals, ensure the safety of our patients and team, maximize resources and prioritize services, all non-urgent, non-essential services have been postponed until further notice.

  • This will not affect urgent and emergent surgical procedures, chemotherapy, dialysis and obstetrical care, including booked c-sections.
  • Affected patients will be contacted directly, whether to postpone a specific service, or to undertake pre-admission work over the phone.
Update: June 9, 2020

We are beginning to resume some appointments and procedures that were paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are following direction from the provincial government, which has recommended a phased approach to service ramp up in hospitals across Ontario.  Click here for more information.

Update: May 22, 2020

HPHA is working alongside South West hospitals and our community healthcare partners, on a plan to reintroduce services. Thank you to our community members for your support and patience as we work through this process.  More information is available by clicking or tapping here.
