Renal Care Closer to Home: Satellite Dialysis Unit
The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance’s (HPHA) Dialysis Unit is a satellite unit of the Regional Renal Program at London Health Sciences Centre. The unit supports stable patients requiring dialysis in our area to decrease the need to travel to and from London.
What is dialysis?
Dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure. The kidneys remove waste and excess water (fluids) collected by, and carried in, the blood as it flows through the body.
Chronic kidney failure occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to do their job.
One treatment for kidney disease is hemodialysis. In hemodialysis, blood is passed through a machine which mimics the natural kidney function for the removal of uremic toxins and fluid.
Patients are given a dialysis schedule which is usually three times a week. Each treatment ranges between three and four hours in length.
All patients are assessed in London before using the HPHA Dialysis Unit.
